Gimp
Gimp is, apart from the famous Adobe Photoshop, one of the best applications meant for photo edition. Of course, the Adobe product is rather expensive, and on the other hand – Gimp is available for free, which is why it still gains popularity among users who love photo edition – both amateurs and professionals. Gimp is a bit difficult to use, and the latest version is very extensively developed, so we will need a bit more time to learn all of its functions; however, it is still worth to spend some time on discovering its possibilities, since this software offers us multitude of various interesting possibilities. Obviously, Gimp allows us to modify the contrast, white balance, or color saturation of images. It offers also many other tools, which are meant for a more advanced edition. Among others, we can try out the lasso which helps us to outline the individual elements of the photograph, as well as cut out, crop and paste elements, and all that with the use of helpful layers. Layers greatly affect the quality of our work, because they allows us to try out all the tools without having to worry that we will not be able to go back to the original state of the photograph. Some other standard options are, of course, the reduction of red eyes and the change of resolution. Gimp handles all those operations – the standard and the more advanced functions – without problems. Of course, the most important here is the users’ knowledge how to use the available tools. Moreover, Gimp is equipped with several artistic filters, which will help us to change the photograph so that it will be more interesting, and maybe surprising. Obviously, Gimp is a great alternative for the expensive Adobe Photoshop.
